Theater Tradition + Convention

The theater tradition that I chose to do my research presentation on is Noh dance drama, which is the oldest theater tradition still in practice, originating from Japan. The convention that I am choosing to showcase is movement; I think I will particularly focus on foot movement and posture, and possibly the speed of movement. I chose Noh theater as my theater tradition because I realized while I was looking at the list of possible theater traditions that while I have some experience learning about traditional Western/European theater traditions, I know very little about Eastern culture, and therefor I know virtually nothing about theater traditions from that region. I chose to focus on a theater tradition from Japan because I knew that I wanted to focus on a tradition that uses movement and dance to communicate emotion.... while there were some theater traditions from Asian countries that used dance, many of the traditions on the list focused on puppetry or somethi...

Pipeline - Brecht

Article on Brecht Technique - https://thedramateacher.com/epic-theatre-conventions/  instead of projection on the screen, the pushing and the fight continues to happen between each scene, but in different ways  at one point its like a boxing match, at another point its in slow motion, at another point it is something else  flashing lights here?  at the points where Nia is talking to the class, she actually interacts with the audience sort of like in Mobile  the stage is confined within a box, changing out set pieces inside the box  the characters themselves do the changing  moments in the scene, the characters pause and ask the audience what they would do  Nia would get the audience to recite the poem back with her --> repeat after me Omari would be sitting in the audience as if he was a member of the class, but when he recites the poem he will be yelling  BRECHT technique  characters that are not on stage are in the audience, wa...

ISTA Workshops Reflections

Overall, I think that these workshops were helpful and effective. I think that from the beginning, it has been somewhat difficult to conduct these workshops because the instructor has been over zoom, but I think we have made it work. I liked the format of the flipped classroom, where the whole session was dedicated to actually trying out the techniques and theater practices instead of just sitting through the slideshow.            Some of the activities in these workshops were a bit frustrating for me because after a take or two I often get bored with an idea and feel that there is not much more to experiment with or pull from, and the instructor had us work quite a lot on trying lots of different variations of the same thing. I understand though that this is an important aspect of theater that I need to get used to because I am sure we will continue to work on this throughout the rest of this year and next. I am...

The Starting Point in Theater

Must be something that resonates with me personally at least in some way must have room for exploration  must give me "the feeling" -- excitement, interest, engagement, makes the gears in my brain start spinning  Night at the Museum Game:  - students will play statues, standing in different positions on the stage that they think represent the starting point. They will position their bodies to reflect the meaning or relate to the starting point  - there will be one "inspector" that will walk around inspecting the students in their positions  - students must switch positions or poses when the inspector is not looking and try not to get caught  - if the inspector sees the student move, the student is out. Students must move, they cannot stay in the same position the entire time. Students must embody the starting point to the best of their abilities  Reflection:  - the actual night at the museum game was interesting but probably not super affect...
